My top books of 2024

My top reads of 2024

I read 31 books this year and here are the best of them, according to my taste.
(in no order)

The Greatest Minds and Ideas of All Time because it is such a great summary of precisely what the book claims :)

The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read because it is such a good guide on how parents shape up their kids.

What I learnt about investing from Darwin because I found it fascinating how much one can learn about investing from the Darwinian theory of evolution.

Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren't Growing Up because it shocked me how therapy might be destroying an entire generation.

Four Thousand Weeks because it was a practical and simple way of managing time.

The Learning Game because it chose to redefine education; the way we understand it today.

The Money Trap because it was one of the most well-written autobiographies of recent times and in a domain (startups) that is close to me.

Accelerating India's Development because it is possibly the best written book for a layman such as me, who wishes to understand how the India's administrative machinery works (and doesn't).

What are some good books you read?

Question of the week

Will you make any New Year resolutions for 2025?

  • Already made them
  • No I won't
  • I want to and I will
  • I don't make resolutions
  • Maybe, maybe not. Not sure

(and see the results of others, too)

Results of last week's question

This was a year of increased expenses and thankfully for most people, increased salary as well. While a scary 18% of people aged 40+ had their salary reduce and expenses increase.

My response?
Salary remained the same; expenses reduced.

2 quotes I wish to share

You have two options in life:
Infuse people with your energy.
Or
Get affected by people’s energy.

You don't have to find your enemies.
They find you.

1 new thing I learnt this week

India has two time zones - one was Calcutta and the other was Mumbai. It was 1906 when Madras (Chennai) was adopted as the IST. Although IST was officially adopted in 1947, Calcutta Time continued to be used until 1948, and Bombay Time remained in use until 1955.

Struggling in your 20s? Why are your 20s so challenging? Because the four pillars of life feel like they’re all in flux: Relationships Old-school friendships fade. New college bonds aren’t fully formed. Work friendships feel untrustworthy. Romantic relationships are confusing because we don’t yet understand ourselves. Family ties become strained because they don’t fully understand us. CareerConstantly unsure of our paths. Everyone else seems to be doing better. We don’t love our jobs. We...

3 things a vacation with parents taught me Last week, I went on a vacation with my parents. This was the first time when just the 3 of us had gone for a holiday, and the idea of it was quite exciting. It turned out to be an awesome experience - much better than I had thought. Upon my return, the next day as I was meditating, I reflected on the 4 days, asking myself if there was anything new I figured about myself or them. Here they are:1. No amount of material success, social validation,...

3 questions I ask every successful person I meet What do you do in your free time? What tasks/activities make you forget about time? What problems do you enjoy solving the most? First, who do I find successful? Anyone who is in control of their life. Anyone who owns their time, peace, and work more than others controlling their time, peace, or work. As you will notice, this definition isn't about money, title, or fame. By this definition, many people who might not be called successful on...
