Not awesome at anything?

It is not about just one skill

The most frequent remark I hear about career is, "Ankur, I am not good at anything."

"They are good at coding. I am not."
"They are good at public speaking. I am not."
"They are good at editing. I am not."
"They are good at sales. I am not."

That is a limiting way of looking at one's career.

You see, there are two ways of building an epic career.
One way is to become the best at what you do.
The top 1% or 5%.
Most of us think that this is the only way to build an epic career.

But there is another way.
To be in the top 20% of two or more fields, which rarely intersect.

Let me share an example:
Am I the best teacher in the world? No.
Am I the best speaker in the world? No.
Do I have the biggest social media following in the world? No.
Am I the best at simplifying things? No.
Do I have the best team in the world? No.
Am I the best with people? No.

But I am the sum of all of these.
Someone who is a teacher, speaks well, has a decent social media following, is good at simplifying things, and has a dedicated team that I care about.

Together, all of these things make me work.
Not one thing in particular.

Your career success doesn't have to be that one big talent that defines you forever.
The sum of your 'average' talents can be more valuable than any one big talent or skill.

Build An Epic Career

Much like money, we rarely have the right conversations about careers, growing up.
It is always about what we should become - a doctor, engineer, lawyer, CA!
It is never about how to think about our careers.

So, I wrote my fourth book on careers - after having tried to build one for 20+ years.
This book is a no BS, simple, practical but hard-hitting take on how to think of one's career.
You are going to love this one!

Question of the week

If you could succeed in only one aspect of your life from these - which one would it be?

  • Relationships
  • Health
  • Wealth
  • Career

(and see the results of others, too)

Results of last week's question

Clearly, movies are not planned. I like the fact that once a week increases consistently with age. Or maybe it's a cultural factor where today's generation watch more series than movies. Is it?

My response?
Same - not planned.

3-2-1

3 pics from last week

Was in Bangalore last week and came across this stunning tree.
What an incredible sight.

A lovely way of looking at the new year.
Or for that matter, every day.

Did you know that authors receive only 5 free copies of their own books? Haha. Pretty weird, but that's the norm.
I had my copies delivered last week.

2 quotes I wish to share

The one who challenges you, even at the risk of their relationship with you, is the one who truly loves you.

There is only one end in life. Death.
Until then, there is another chance, another moment, another opportunity.

1 new thing I learnt this week

The hottest planet in the solar system is not Mercury despite being the closest to the Sun.
It is Venus. Because of the carbon dioxide in its air that absorbs heat a lot more than Mercury's atmosphere does.
Something I knew all along, but realized a lot of people don't.
Fun fact :)

The shoot last week made me realise this... I was in Mumbai last week for an ad film shoot: 14 hours straight — 7 AM to 9 PM — with a team of about 200 people. We shot 5 ad films. It wasn’t my first shoot, but each time inspires me. This time, I realised something: to the experts on the team — stylists, makeup artists, photographers — I’m not Ankur Warikoo or even a person. I’m what their work demands. As soon as I reached my hotel room, the styling team was waiting for me. In the next 60...
