What's your score?

Mindset, not marks

Every year, when the Class 12th board results are announced, I share my Class 12th marksheet as well.
With an important note.

During our time, our comparison set was a small group of kids.
Class kids and colony kids.
Some scored better than us; some scored worse.
So, we got compared with a select few.
After a few days, things began to settle.

Today's generation has it intensely hard.
The entire world is their comparison set.
Even the ones scoring 99% have thousands of examples of kids scoring 99.1%, 99.2%, and even 99.9%.
Leaving them with a feeling of unworthiness.

But the one thing life has taught me is that the biggest misery of life is comparison.
The more we compare ourselves with someone else, the more miserable we will remain.

I scored 57 in English in my Class 12th.
Today, the top companies and colleges across the world invite me to address their employees and students.
I scored 93 in Chemistry.
And never touched that subject ever again.
I scored 87 in Physics.
Pursued it, only to change my life completely and do something far removed from Physics.

Our marks don't matter.
Our mindset matters.

Our comparison should not be with someone else.
It should be with who we were yesterday.
And if today, you are a better version of yourself than who you were yesterday — you are winning!

Our marks tell us how we performed in a 3 hour exam.
Our mindset will tell us how we perform in life.

PS: Here is my Class 12th Marksheet

Book I read this week

Finished reading Think Like a Rocket Scientist: Simple Strategies for Giant Leaps in Work and Life by Ozan Varol.
Light, insightful and relatable. Definitely a book I would have loved to read in my 20s.

I have shared several books in this newsletter over the years.
A list of all of them can be found here.

Question of the week

What describes you the best?

  • I think about the past a lot
  • I think about the future a lot

(and see the results of others, too)

Results of last week's question

Future worries win, haha!
When young, they are worried about everything.
Past memories is surprisingly low.
And with age, "no worries at all" keeps rising. Which is lovely.

My response?
I don't worry at all about these.

3-2-1

3 pics from last week

Ruchi's latest water colour painting.
This is with 1+ year of practice, with no prior experience!
Insane what regular practice can achieve.

A fantastic Mexican rice bowl by Masterchef Vidur :))
There is a layer of rice below and then on top there is Tofu, Corn, Guacamole, Salsa, Black Beans, Mango and Jalapenos.

2 quotes I wish to share

People don’t change when you tell them of a better option.
People change when they realise there is no other option.

Become the person you are jealous of.
Else you will always hate the person you have become.

1 new thing I learnt this week

In black and white films, milk was used to simulate rain because water was not visible on camera.

What works for you? Somebody asked me over email:"I am 26 years old, working guy, I get lot of ideas on different topics across the day, but they later get lost. I feel those are great ideas for content creation (if I start someday by any chance) but I want to document them. My question is - how do you come up with so many topics, content on that, also relating it to yourself and your journey, clearly looks coming directly from yourself, and not a random article taken from the Internet?" My...

You're just busy, not better I received an email this morning:I am a banker. I have been a compliance professional for almost 8 years (my whole career). Right now, I am in XXX, in their London office. I am in a good place, career-wise. I make more than enough money, and I am respected by my team and seniors alike. But I always had a deep desire to contribute meaningfully to society. I wish to leave London for the Rural Exploration of my home state - XXX. I wish to understand what's going on...

You defeated yourself Disclaimer: This post will be triggering for those with a mental medical condition, in which case I would request you to not go through it. I received an email yesterday:I’m a 20-year-old girl, and I’d really appreciate some suggestions from you. I used to be a good student until class 9, but everything changed after I confessed my feelings to my crush and got rejected. He insulted me brutally, and since then, I’ve been struggling with deep insecurity and a lack of...
